So for this mix I’ve grasped at the most random of straws, trying to find the music I love which I believe other people should as well. I have really, really odd tastes in music all over the spectrum, and while I wish there were other people identical to me, I realize that ain’t happenin’. Thus, I’ve decided to edit things down to the things I think, for one reason or another, is great, underappreciated stuff. It may not all go together or flow, but I’ve discovered that an alphabetical playlist creates for a mix that almost always remains interesting.

My notes for this mix:
Atlas Sound - Quarantined (from the Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel LP)
Was just led to discover these guys by my friend Joe, and on first listen this one stood way out to me. Have no idea how to describe this sound, but it’s great.
Blue Roses - Doubtful Comforts (from the Blue Roses EP)
I instantly wanted to hear more from Blue Roses after I found this track on an XL records 2008-2009 music sampler. Doesn’t disappoint. Let’s see if you want to do the same. Lullaby, anybody? This should probably go at the END of the mix, but I’m not complaining.
Does it Offend You, Yeah? - Attack of the 60 ft Lesbian Octopus (from the You Have No Idea What You’re Getting Yourself Into LP)
I thought in honor of Dreamworks’ Monsters Vs Aliens 3D opening today, this would be a fitting entry. Sure, I doubt that there’s a 60 ft lesbian octopus in the film, but talk about a song with a perfect title. This sound like a keyboard being attacked in a 60s sci-fi B-movie. Dance that ass off.
Espers - Riding (from the Espers LP)
Does ANYBODY else know about Espers but myself? I love it when you find something nobody’s heard of and it feels like your own little private recording artist. At the same time, I wish in certain situations (like this one) where I wish I wasn’t the ONLY one. They’ve got three albums that are beautiful, haunting, and expertly made.
Etta James - Something’s Got a Hold on Me (from the Gold Collection LP)
Amazing soul, and I’d rather remember Etta more fondly for tracks like this. She’s not dead yet, but...y’know...I’ll remember her this way.
Freddie King - Going Down (from the King of the Blues LP)
The theme to HBO’s hilarious Eastbound and Down, which is the perfect theme for the tone of the show. If you don’t know who Danny McBride is yet, there is no better showcase to get you in love than this one. Oh, and Freddie’s a blues master here.
Johnny Cash - When the Man Comes Around (from the American IV LP)
One of the last great Cash tracks.
K’nann - America (feat. Mos Def and Chali 2NA) (from the Trubador LP)
One of hip hop’s newest emerging talents. It’s a weird one, but it’s got Chali on it (whom I met briefly) and it’s got a wicked beat.
Lady Sovereign - So Human (from the Jigsaw LP)
This UK import is a feisty little white rapper, and on her new disc she tries for some more pop friendly endeavors like this one right here. Try to get the chorus out of your head.
Metric - Help I’m Alive (from the Fantasies LP)
A group that’s been around for a while (and under my radar). This opening track on their new disc is a stunner.
Michael McDonald - I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near) (from the Ultimate Collection LP)
Yep.
N.A.S.A. - Way Down (feat. RZA, Barbie and John Frusciante) (from The Spirit of Apollo LP)
This album is easily one of my favorites of 2009 thus far. This collection from two DJ/producers took years to assemble, and boasts some of the oddest collaborators (Kool Keith and Tom Waits, anyone?) ever assembled in one place. I adore this song.
Ol’Dirty Bastard - Lift Ya Skirt (feat. Missy Elliott) (from the A Son Unique LP)
R.I.P., ODB. Mark Ronson drives this piano based come on. Classic.
Otis Redding - These Arms of Mine (from The Definitive Collection LP)
I think, maybe, my favorite love song of all time, and absolutely one of Otis’ best tracks by a mile. Seriously, try to find me a song more romantic and sincere than this one.
Peter Bjorn and John - Nothing to Worry About (from the Living Things LP)
After an instrumental experiment last year, these Swedes have returned with some more catchy tunes, and none more so than this bouncy pop ditty.
Prince - Black Sweat (from the 3121 LP)
With his new 3-disc set arriving as a Target exclusive next Tuesday, I thought I’d like to remind everyone of the best thing Prince has done since Pussy Control. I guarantee it’s better than any of his new stuff will be.
Rusty Truck - Fool (from the Luck’s Changing LP)
I discovered this group (or this guy) as the closing music for an episode of HBO’s True Blood, and hunted high and low to find out what it was. Not quite country, but certainly twinged with a bit of southern comfort, and every track is memorable. This ballad is among my favorites.
Teriyaki Boyz - Zock On! (feat. Pharrell and Busta Rhymes) (from the Serious Japanese LP)
Japanese rap trio mix it up with the space age producer and one of the greatest MC’s. Out there, but it’s infectious.
The Black Ghosts - Some Way Through This (from The Black Ghosts LP)
I don’t even know how to classify this music, but it’s awesome. Alternative, for sure.
The Prodigy - Run With the Wolves (from the Invaders Must Die! LP)
The electronic 90s dance-masters come with a fury on this cut from their modern throwback album.
Tom Waits - Make It Rain (from the Real Gone LP)
One of his finest moments.
That’s all. See you soon. Be sure to comment.

NICE. Brilliant. I will listen to it while I study.
Quarantined was on one of my work mixes.
PS: When did that Nomi Malone banner go up? I LOVE it!
It's a rotating banner, I change it as frequently as I think about it.
